Federal, state and local agencies are doing an incredible job handling hundreds of thousands of Public Records Requests (PRRs) every year, but all face challenges:
- the number of requests rises steadily each year, which is taking staff and financial resources away from other public services.
- agencies know they have to keep on top of costs, but at the state and local level, we have very few statistics about how much is being spent on PRRs.
- you can’t contain costs if you don’t know what they are.
In this white paper we discuss the anatomy of what makes up the total cost of handling PRRs, and begin to explore ways in which these different costs might be reined back.
