Session to Focus on How End Users Combine High-Recall
Search Tools with Visualization; Event to Take Place June 27-28
at the Park Hyatt Philadelphia
June 27, 2005 - Vienna, VA - ZyLAB, an innovative
developer of content management and compliance solutions for paper
intensive organizations, today announced that its CEO, Dr. Johannes
Scholtes, is a featured presenter at next week's Intelligence Tools,
Data Mining, Visualization (IDV) Conference (http://www.infonortics.com/idv/05pro.html)
hosted by Infonortics. The event takes place June 27-28 at the Park
Hyatt in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The premise of Dr. Scholtes' presentation is that law enforcement,
security and intelligence agencies always require 100% recall when
analysing large data collections. They are not in the position to
miss a potenially relevant document. However, as recall accuracy
goes up, the precision of these systems goes down. As a result,
analyzing and organizing all possibly relevant information is a
tremendous task that can take months and sometimes longer, thus
seriously delaying investigations and trials.
In theory, modern search-engine technology should allow users to
overcome the lack of precision and continue to focus on recall.
However, due to the variety of languages used, document sizes, and
document structures, types, and domains - plus the fact that most
users do not always know exactly what they are looking for - these
advanced search algorithms may still not adequately address all
of the relevant concerns. In addition, these search algorithms are
often too domain or language dependent, work too slowly, or require
too much manual training and fine-tuning. Users may not be aware
of all the issues involved and may ultimately become frustrated,
leading them to avoid using the technology altogether.
In this presentation, practical examples are given of simple, straightforward
search-related concepts such as fuzzy search, hit highlighting,
hit navigation, relevance feedback, categorization, classification
tools and data visualization, which allow users to reach 100 percent
recall and overcome the lack of precision by interactively navigating
through data collections without losing sight of the context in
which they are working. Tools with a visualization focus are rapidly
being embraced by even relatively non-skilled users in the law enforcement
and legal domains.
