XML-Based Redaction Helps Agencies Mask Classified
and Sensitive Information; Supports The Openness Promotes Effectiveness
in our National Government Act of 2005
June 20, 2005 - Vienna, VA - ZyLAB, an innovative
developer of content management and compliance solutions for paper
intensive organizations, today announced that it is now offering
advanced redaction as a standard tool within its ZyIMAGE Product
Suite. This new offering addresses the growing need for a reliable
and affordable Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) solution to ensure
confidential information is reliably redacted 100 percent of the
time.
ZyLAB's solution will specifically help Federal Agencies address
The Openness Promotes Effectiveness in our National (OPEN) Government
Act of 2005 which is focused on expediting how Agencies handle requests
for government information under FOIA. Specifically addressing OPEN,
ZyLAB's solution will provide FOIA officials with the right tool
to fill requests and help Agencies get timely responses to requests.
Key benefits to the ZyLAB redaction solution include:
Wide Range of Functionality
ZyLAB's new redaction tools offer a full range of the most-requested
redaction features, including redaction on scanned images as well
as click-and-drag capabilities, multi-color redaction, synonym redactions
(replacing a name with a code), version control, and more. Redactions
can be tagged with additional key-field information, which can contain
data and time stamps, comments or applicable legal rules, redaction
creators, and additional user-defined key fields.
More security than PDF or MS-Word
Redacted documents can be exported as XML with multi-paged TIFFs
or image PDFs. Unlike standard PDFs or Word files, though, in which
the redacted text isn't always 100 percent secure, a ZyIMAGE-created
PDF does not contain any hidden traces or references to the original
text. In other words, the redaction is "burned" into the
PDF or image, making it impossible for anyone to manipulate the
redacted information or to recover the redacted text.
Prevention of Disclosure Blunders
As soon as redactions are applied they are added to the XML structure
of the documents. Because the redactions are linked in a perpetual
manner to the documents, historical redactions are immediately available
if a document is redacted at a later moment in time. This capability
ensures that sensitive parts of original documents will not be disclosed
even if that document needs to be used at different times in different
contexts with different sets of redactions.
Functionality developed in tandem with users
ZyLAB designed its electronic redaction tool with the input of many
ZyIMAGE power users, such as the War Crimes Tribinals for Rwanda
and Yugoslavia as well as several UK and USA law-enforcement and
government officials.
This XML-based redaction solution adds to the already comprehensive
ZyIMAGE product suite that also contains tools for case management,
advanced discovery, e-disclosure and other tools supporting important
government and legal productivity activities.
