More than 300,000 pages from historic newspapers

Amsterdam, The Netherlands May 27th 2003 -
ZyLAB, a leading provider of advanced document management and full-text
retrieval software, was selected by the Royal Dutch Library (“Koninklijke
Bibliotheek”) to help it process and manage 300,000 pages of historic
newspapers. This project entails setting up and executing all phases
of information archiving, from scanning and digitization to optical
character recognition (OCR) to making the content searchable.
ZyLAB will perform all of the data processing, and the ZyLAB software
will be used for all the subsequent searching and retrieval of the
newspapers.
This project is a component of The Netherlands’ national conservation
program “Metamorfoze”, an initiative of the Royal Library. A part
of this project is undertaken in cooperation with the The Hague
Municipal Archive, within the scope of the Royal Library’s digitization
project “The Memory of the Netherlands”.
“ZyLAB was selected because of the straightforward proposal and
the convincing presentation,” says Rubrecht Zaat, project coordinator
at the Royal Library. “Another important issue was that ZyLAB has
a strong presence in the Netherlands, which facilitates good communications
between the parties. ZyLAB has shown flexibility and helps us in
developing the correct solution. The ZyLAB software requires little
customization, and it appears that the solution needs no further
development. Furthermore, ZyLAB has profound regional and international
experience in being able to process large newspaper collections.”

Library will decide on future projects concerning the electronic
availability of historic newspapers, based on the current experiences.

The primary historic collections to be processed at this juncture
of the project are various editions of Dutch regional newspapers,
circa 1910-1945. This project is scheduled to be completed before
September 2003.
